First Year Scholarships

Merit Scholarships

Requires that applications for fall admission be received by February 1. Scholarships are renewable for up to seven consecutive semesters for those students who maintain continuous, full time enrollment and a minimum grade point average of 3.00.  All award amounts for academic year (fall and spring semesters).

Maine Residents

Creating Maine’s Future Presidential Scholarship
$5,000 per academic year

Awarded to incoming first-year students who are graduating from Maine high schools. Must be nominated by high school principal or guidance counselor. Recipients are chosen based on scholastic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and exceptional personal qualities.

President’s Lewiston-Auburn College Scholarship
$5,000 per academic year

Awarded to an incoming first-year or transfer student who is enrolled full-time in any Lewiston-Auburn College major. Award is affiliated with the Creating Maine’s Future Presidential Scholarships. An application, essay, and two recommendations are required. The recipient will be chosen based on scholastic achievement and exceptional personal qualities. Preference will be given to residents of Androscoggin County. Download the President’s Lewiston-Auburn College scholarship application form.

Charles J. Hoff Scholarship
$3,000 per academic year
Awarded to incoming first-year students from Maine high schools and transfer students from the Maine Community College System. Preference will be given to graduates of York High School, and transfers from York County Community College. Consideration will also be given to immigrants and refugees, students from single-parent homes, and students with developmental or other learning disabilities. This award is renewable for a minimum of 2 additional years. Recipients are chosen based on academic promise and financial need. Download the Charles J. Hoff scholarship application form.

Dirigo Merit Scholarship
$2,200 per academic year

Awarded to incoming first-year students who graduate in the top 10% of their class or with an A- average and who attain a 1100 SAT (Critical Reading and Math only) or 24 ACT composite score

Opportunity Merit Scholarship
$1,200 per academic year

Awarded to incoming first-year students who are under-represented Maine residents who graduate in the top 30% of their class or with a B average, and who attain a 950 SAT (Critical Reading and Math only) or 20 ACT composite score, and who exhibit exemplary extracurricular involvement.

NEWUSM Pioneers Program
The USM Pioneers is a new science, technology, engineering, and math scholars program. The first group of 8 Pioneers, to begin Fall 2011, will receive a 4-year scholarship package covering tuition and fees, a laptop computer, undergraduate research opportunities, paid internships with exciting opportunities and companies, and select housing in a learning community environment. Pioneer applicants must be Maine high school students, admitted into one of the following USM “STEM” (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) majors: Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Environmental Science, General Science, Geosciences, Industrial Technology, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Natural and Applied Sciences, Physics. Out-of-State Residents

Presidential Commendation Merit Scholarship
$6,100 per academic year

Awarded to incoming first-year students who graduate in the top 10% of their class or with an A- average, and who attain a 1100 SAT (Critical Reading and Math only) or 24 ACT composite score.

Presidential Recognition Merit Scholarship
$4,000 per academic year

Awarded to incoming first-year students who graduate in the top 30% of their class or with a B average, and who attain a 1000 SAT (Critical Reading and Math only) or 21 ACT composite score.
