Transfer Scholarships

President's Lewiston-Auburn Scholarship

The President’s Lewiston-Auburn Scholarship was established by the LAC Community Advisory Council in 2010. This scholarship is awarded to an incoming first-year or transfer student who is enrolled in any Lewiston-Auburn College major. The award is $5,000 per year, renewable for 3 additional years. Applicants must submit an application, essay, and two recommendations. First consideration will be given to applicants to apply to USM by February 1st. Preference will be given to residents of Androscoggin County. The recipient will be chosen based on scholastic achievement and exceptional personal qualities and will be chosen by a committee of LAC representatives. Charles J. Hoff Scholarship

The Charles J. Hoff Scholarship was established in 2010 as the result of a generous donation from the Hoff Foundation and matching funds from USM in the amount of $3,000.. It is awarded to incoming first-year students from Maine high schools and transfer students from the Maine Community College System. Preference will be given to graduates of York High School and transfers from York County Community College. Consideration will also be given to immigrants and refugees, students from single-parent homes, and students with developmental or other learning disabilities. This award is renewable for a minimum of 2 additional years. Recipients are chosen based on academic promise and financial need. Download the the Charles J. Hoff Scholarship application form.

Gorman Scholars Fund

The Gorman Scholars Fund was established to help Maine Community College students continue their education at USM.  These scholarships are renewable for up to three years.  Any student admitted to USM by June 11, 2011 for the fall semester and who meets the following criteria will be automatically considered for one of these $2,500 scholarships:

  • Maine resident transferring from a Maine Community College
  • Minimum 24 earned credits
  • Minimum transfer grade point average of 3.0
  • Planning to attend USM full-time (minimum 12 credit hours per semester)
  • Pursuing first bachelor’s degree

Leon and Lisa Gorman Scholarship for Transfer Students

The Leon and Lisa Gorman Scholarship for Transfer Students was established to assist transfer students in making the transition to the University of Southern Maine.  One new recipient will be selected annually through a competitive process for this two year award.  The award is $1,500 for the first year and $1,000 for the second year.  To receive this award in the second year, a minimum USM GPA of 2.7 and registration for six or more credit hours are required.  Eligibility requirements for this scholarship include:

Phi Theta Kappa Transfer Scholarship

(Awarded on a limited basis)

The University of Southern Maine, through its Office of Transfer Affairs, supports the education of exemplary students who have earned an associate degree from a community or technical college.  Membership in the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society is a prerequisite for consideration.  The minimum award is $500 per semester.  This scholarship is renewable for up to three consecutive semesters with maintenance of a 3.0 GPA while at USM.  Transfer students applying for admission who meet the following criteria are automatically considered for this award:

  • Member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.
  • 3.25 GPA and an A.A., A.S., or A.A.S. degree from a community or technical college (please note: students with previous bachelor’s degree and non-U.S. citizens are ineligible).
  • Applying for fall admission (preferred) and intending to enroll full-time.
  • Completed USM application on file by May 1.  Subsequent proof of earned associate degree must be submitted by July 1.
