Cor 140 Thoughts about Censorship on the Internet

Tammy Mazza tmazza@psouth.net  I thought the speaker was very good. After listening to him, I had more questions about the religion itself. He got me interested, made me want to learn more, which is the sign of a good speaker.
Joseph Fournier (jfourn52@maine.edu)
It never really seemed real complex to me and it still doesn't. Quite simply we must allow people to freely express their opinion and viewpoints no matter how radical or extreme they are. To restrict (as a society) what anyone has to say makes us no better than the very people that some wish to restrict. One can argue this point on
many levels.
Jaime Clark (jclark65@mail.caps.maine.edu)
I believe that as long as these people are not saying or showing anything that would physically or mentally injure someone, then they should be able to say what they want.
Jessica Hayes (nbk_187@usa.net)
l though I would really like to see all hateful and prejudiced material removed from our lives on the internet and other things it is not realistic. I think that instead of
concentrating so much time on banning the material outright (which we have seen is not effective) we need to use this offensive material and inform people what is
wrong with it.
Huei-Chin Sherry Feng (sfeng61@mail.caps.maine.edu
The first Amendment to the U.S. constitution guarantees the right of freedom of speech, therefore, I believe people can post whatever they wanted to say (It's freedom of speech)
James Allen (jallen61@maine.edu)
I believe that we must allow for absolute free speech, except perhaps in cases that may directly lead to
personal harm of someone.
JAMIE CHANG (lchang51@mail.caps.maine.edu)
Violence, sexual explicit and racial hatre exist everywhere in this world not only on the Internet.

Another Point of View

In a wonderfully stimulating book titled, Literacy in a Digital World (1998),
Kathleen Tyner writes:

Some see the attack on media as an elaborate ruse that diverts the conversationaway from weightier matters of social inequality and sacrifice. Cultural critic Todd Gitlin concedes that contemporary media content is sometimes odious, but questions the wisdom of crusades against it. Of campaigns against television violence, he said:

The campaign against the devil's images threads through the history of middle-class reform movements. For a nation that styles itself practical, at least in technical pursuits, we have always been a playground of moral prohibitions and symbolic crusades. . . That media violence contributes to a
climate in which violence is legitimate--and there can be no doubt of this--does not make it an urgent social problem. Violence on the screens, however loathsome, does not make a significant contribution to violence on the streets. Images don't spill blood. Rage, equipped with guns, does. (Gitlin, 1994, pp. 42-45)

After 5 calls to Chase Online technical support for help in downloading transactions for my overdraft protection account, I am still   unable to get this information. My last call was to a manager who was very pleasant, but still did not resolve the problem. Each time I was told that they see what the problem is, and will reset their system and for me to wait 24 or 48 hours before attempting to  download again. Of course, each of those times I called, I had to hold probably an average of 1/2 hour. When opening the account, the monthly fee for my checking account was supposed to be $2.00 per month. That fee grew to $4.00 per month within six months and without advanced notice from the bank.
