USM Students Awarded Four New Dean's Scholarships
September 13, 2010
Four University of Southern Maine students have been awarded new Dean’s Scholarships of $1,000 each, renewable for up to four years.
The recipients, all of whom are freshmen, are: Jordan Maroon, an English major from Winslow; Siri Norman, a linguistics major from Auburn; Janson O’Neill, a chemistry major from Biddeford; and Jacob White, a theatre major from Turner.
The Dean’s Scholarships are based on proven academic achievement and are eligible for renewal as long as recipients earn a minimum grade point average of 3.0 each fall and spring semester.
The scholarships were made possible thanks to the support of individuals who serve on the university’s Arts and Sciences Advisory Board. “We are fortunate to have community advisors from various fields and professions who care deeply enough about this university to offer us their guidance and who also want to support our students through their financial contributions,” said Dean Lynn Kuzma.
The Dean’s Scholarships are part of USM’s “Creating Maine’s Future Campaign for Scholarships,” a campaign to help more Maine students afford a high-quality, public university education. More than $890,000 has been raised to date for a range of new USM scholarships.
Scholarship aid is becoming increasingly important for students who wish to pursue an education. Last academic year alone, 8,900 students, or more than 91 percent of USM students, have received some form of financial aid, much of it in the form of loans. The average student debt for an undergraduate upon graduation from USM is $25,892.

The festive evening,
attended by colleagues, friends and family, featured Betsy reading
several of her favorite poems and some new work.
Poets Annie Finch, Stuart Kestenbaum, and April Ossman also
read from their own work, a poem of Betsy's and an evocative ancient
piece. The celebration continued with the
presentation to Betsy of a fountain pen and laurel wreath, and concluded
with a champagne toast and refreshments. The College of Arts
and Sciences is proud to have Betsy Sholl as a member of our faculty
