Here is a different way to describe ARS110:
We want to help students who already have a special interest, hobby, goal, or passion to connect with professors, staff, and community members who have similar interests and who can help you advance your interest forward. Most of these people are very helpful and easy to talk with. A few of them will visit class to help make connections and provide us specific, inspiring examples.
We want to help show you how students make connections and discover opportunities in college. We'll meet with advanced students to learn from their experiences.
Part of finding your unique path to a valuable education involves communicating with others and building friendships and relationships. The most valuable part of college is definitely not sitting quietly in class taking notes. It is meeting new people and building academic freindships. We will learn from each other. Our assignments will include finding and connecting with professors, staff, and others in the campus community or beyond.
Some relationships you make during college can inspire you and will really help make your college education worthwhile. They can help you be comfortable and happy during college. They can help you make connections that will help you with career plans and finding jobs or further education opportunities. We will begin making those connections right at the beginning of college so you will feel more comfortable and committed to college.
We will learn about each others unique interests. The topics will be very diverse. Someone may be interested in chemistry reasearch and medical schol. Someone might be interesed in becoming a chef and perhaps owning their own restaurant someday. Another of your classmates may be an artist interested in a career directing art museums.. What we will share in common will be the discovery that your current interests can become careers. Making that happen involves effort and skills that can't be taught in a class. We can help each other discover the resources and people who can help you move forward to create value in college and beyond.
