This is the course description for ARS110 from the USM Undergraduate Catalogue:

ARS110 Explorations in Creative and Research Activities
A community-building seminar for first-year or transfer students ready to plan independent, mentored research and creative activities with the intention these will become integral to their college education.  Assignments will focus on sharing and supporting the unique process of developing a project and connecting with mentors. The major course goal is to launch each student on a path toward a specific, future participation in a conference such as USM's Thinking Matters.

The course has three, interconnected objectives:
1) Fostering a Successful Transition to the Collegiate Environment:
A.) Students will intentionally observe their support networks, as well as explore ways to strengthen and augment positive support.
B.) Students will gain an understanding of the ways in which listening and observation are employed in both quantitative and qualitative research.
2) Framing and Advancing an Independent, College Project:
A.) Students will gain experience in shaping their creative expressions and research questions into ongoing projects.
B.) Students will participate in collaborative, cross-disciplinary analysis and critical thinking.
3) Gaining Introductory, Decision-Making, Career Skills:
A.) Students will enhance their communication, networking, and listening skills using a number of verbal and arts approaches.
B.) Students will develop practical skills for utilizing library and internet resources.
