General Physics I  PHY 121K
General Physics II  PHY 123

The General Physics course is a two semester calculus based sequence. If you are interested in an algebra based course, see the Elements of Physics courses, PHY 111K & 112.

PHY 121 K General Physics I_

Dates:  May 16 - June 23, 2011
Times: PHY 121 meets Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings from 9:00 to noon. There are three sections of the PHY 114 lab course, all on Tuesday.
Room:  241 Luther Bonney

Prerequisite: Prior or concurrent registration in Calculus A or equivalent. The lecture course (PHY 121) can be taken without the lab course (PHY 114), but the lab cannot be taken without prior or concurrent registration in lecture.

Brief description: General physics I is the first semester of a two semester calculus based physics course intended for science majors. It covers the basic areas of mechanics including oscillations and waves .  It also covers Heat and Thermodynamics.

Text:     Physics for Scientists and Engineers, 4th Edition by Douglas Giancoli.  If you will take both  Physics 121 and 123 this summer, you can get the complete volume.  If you will just take Physics 121, Volume I covers all the information you will need.

Lab:  The lab is a separate course - register for PHY 114K if you need to take lab.  The lab schedule is included below with the course schedule.  The lab manual is available in the bookstore.  Please get one before the first lab.

Instructor:  Robert Coakley coakley@usm.mREMOVEaine.edu (207) 780-4733

Sample Tests:
Tests from previous summers are on electronic reserve through the library.  To access them, go to http://docutek.ursus.maine.edu and click on electronic reserves & reserves pages.  Then enter PHY 121 in the search field and click search.  Next, click on the course number on the left side of the screen.  Finally enter the password and click accept.
