Course Objectives and Student Responsibilities

1) Introduce students to the actors and issues in contemporary world politics.

Your primary text, World Security, is an edited volume whose various authors are experts on the global issues and security concerns covered in the text.  These essays illustrate the interdependence of the world and its people.

2) Help the student obtain and use information on world politics from a variety of sources.

The final class project will require extensive research on a world security issue of your choosing. In assembling your final project, you will be entering cyberspace and traveling on the super information highway. Students will produce a Websites that houses your research.

3) Teach the students to evaluate critically and integrate a range of perspectives on world politics.

To critically evaluate and integrate differing perspective on world politics, students are required to read the assignments in Taking Sides and be prepared to partake in both class discussions and small group exercises. In addition, analysis report of each global issue assigned will be turned in the day of classroom discussion.  Please read "Questions to Ask When Examining a Position" prior to evaluating an author's stance.  Also, be aware that many authors use propaganda when arguing a position.  Read "Propaganda Alert" to become familiar with different techniques.

4) Facilitate the student's cultivation of a personal approach to responsible world citizenship.

Students will be responsible for reading a news source daily:  New York Times
