Lucille A. Benedict
Assistant Professor of Chemistry, USM
I am an assistant professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Southern Maine. My primary teaching responsibilities include Principles of Chemistry I and II (CHY 113 and CHY 115) and Analytical Chemistry (CHY 231 and CHY 232). Within my classes I make connections between chemistry and everyday life. Course material is also related to environmental topics because they are so relevant to social issues today, and because my research focuses on the analysis of environmental contaminants.
Currently in our research lab we are investigating contaminants in street dust in Southern Maine. Past projects in my lab have included, contaminants analysis in cigarette butts, ash and street dust, photocatalytic remediation of contaminates in water systems, and identification of contaminants in various types of compost.
