Brownfield in Bayside

In 1996 the City of Portland, Maine acquired funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for a Brownfield cleanup project.  The site chosen for the project was Bayside, a centrally located area of the city that has been used for industrial purposes since the 1800's.  The purpose of this website is to familiarize the viewer with Portland's Brownfield Project and to understand the importance of cleaning up the site.  A comparison between urban Brownfield sites verses suburban Greenfield sites, background of Bayside with dated maps, and common contaminates are explained.  Also described are the current conditions of the site and Portland's future plans for the site.

Special thanks! to Lydia Savage, Urban Geography Professor and Rick Knowland, City Planner.  I couldn't have completed the project without either of them.
