COURSE OUTLINE
DR. GAYTON
GENERAL PSYCHOLOGY II, SPRING 2011

REQUIRED TEXT: Psychology, DAVIS & PALLADINO,  PEARSON/PRENTICE HALL, 6TH EDITION
Psychology 102 is a continuation of Psy 101. It deals with complex psychological processes such as personality, abnormal behavior, therapy and social psychology. Contact information for the instructor is at the bottom of this document.

I would like you to develop a realization that, from a very early age, you have been developing your own implicit theories of behavior. This course will provide you with an opportunity to compare & contrast your theories with knowledge generated by psychologists using the scientific method. Hopefully this comparison will lead you to adjust your own theories in ways that enrich your ability to understand & predict human behavior. This learning objective requires that you read the class assignments and think critically about what you are reading. Hopefully you will use the instructor as a resource person to help you understand the material and NOT someone who is simply reading the book for you. This will most likely be accomplished by attending classes and joining in class discussion.
.

Class notes are located on a wesite ( http://www.usm.maine.edu/psy/gayton/102/102index.htm ). This site is available 24/7 on the WWW & does not require a password. In addition, their is a link to an online study guide (no fee) as well as website resiurces for each chapter. Information regarding the Psychology Dept. subject pool and eam frequency distributions are also included. There will be (3) multiple-choice exams during the semester. Each of the exams will count as 1/3 of the student’s final grade. Students are responsible for material presented in class lectures as well as in the text. The dates and material to be covered at each class meeting and for each exam are listed in the course sequence below. The schedule for review classes for each exam will appear at the top of the index page for this website. The only way to find out your grade on the exams is to come to the first class after the exam where the GRADES WILL BE HANDED BACK. If you are not in attendance for this class see the instructor before class the next time you are in attendance.  Do not e-mail or call to find out your grade.  Students with an excused absence WILL NEED TO MAKE-UP THE MISSED EXAM/S AT THE TIME THE FINAL EXAM IS SCHEDULED FOR THIS COURSE. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS TO THIS POLICY.  A grade of zero will be entered if exams are not made up in this time period.  An unexcused absence from an exam will be computed as a zero and will be included as such in determination of the final grade.  The ONLY way of earning extra credit is by participating in the Subject Pool. (Not available in Summer Session)
