Librarian Assistance
These librarians hve been designated as liaisons to CONHP, and are available to teach library research classes for your courses, and to assist you with your library research:

  • Lanier Lumbert (lumbert@usm.maine.edu or 780-4620) is the liaison librarian for the Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences program at Gorham.
  • Pat Prieto (pprieto@usm.maine.edu or 780-5662) is the designated librarian for the School of Nursing and the Department of Recreation/Leisure Studies.
  • Evelyn Greenlaw (evelyng@usm.maine.edu or 753-6541) is the contact librarian for faculty who teach at Lewiston-Auburn College.

Chat, e-mail, and appointment research assistance is also available for you and your students through our Ask a Librarian service.

Library Card
Your faculty ID is also your library card. It gives you access to many library services including signing out books, requesting materials through Interlibrary Loan, and using subscription databases from off campus locations. Please come to any campus library to activate your card as soon as possible . Your library barcode is the group of numbers located at the bottom of the card, and begins with the numbers 250.

Signing out Library Materials
USM titles and books borrowed from other UM System libraries may be signed out for a one-semester loan unless requested by someone else. To renew these materials, contact the Circulation Department staff. Books obtained from the University of Maine cannot be renewed.

Placing Materials on Reserve
Information about placing print and electronic materials on reserves is located on the library's webpage. If you wish to reserve books, journal articles or other materials for your students, please complete a course form.

Collection Locations
Faculty have access to four library collections on the USM campus: the Glickman Family Library at Portland, the library at Gorham, a smaller library at Lewiston-Auburn College (LAC), and the Donald S. Garbrecht Law Library. The majority of nursing books and periodicals are located at Portland, with a smaller collection at LAC. The Recreation and Leisure Studies collection is also at Portland, and Sports Medicine materials are at Gorham.

Library Catalog
The library's webpage is the gateway to the many electronic information resources available to faculty and students. These include URSUS , the catalog of USM and other University of Maine system campus collections; Maine InfoNet, which lists the holdings of other Maine libraries; and WorldCat for materials located at hundreds of national and international libraries.

Subscription Databases
Over 150 subscription indexes and databases are available to faculty, including CINAHL, Medline, Evidence Based Medicine Reviews, Health Source, SportDiscus, ERIC, PsycInfo, and many others. See resources by subject for a topical list of indexes. Most of the periodical databases are accessible off campus, and many include full text journal articles.

Requesting Materials for the Library Collections
To request books for any of the USM campus collections complete an acquisitions request form. A periodical request form is also available.

Photocopying
If you need to copy materials in the library please use the account for your Department. Copy cards may be obtained through the Nursing Administrative Assistant by calling 780-4131 for Nursing and Geri Therault for Exercise, Health and Sport Sciences. Recreation and Leisure faculty should see Linda Meyer.

Interlibrary Loan
To obtain materials listed in the URSUS catalog but located at another campus, select the "Requestor" function. Items will be available for pick up at the circulation desk of any of the three campus libraries. To request periodical articles and materials not listed in URSUS, complete an online Interlibrary Loan (Illiad) request form. Most articles are sent to us electronically within 3-5 working days. You will be notified via e-mail when they are available.

Information Literacy
The library is engaged in an information literacy program to assist students to "recognize when information is needed and have the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information." Information literacy forms the basis for lifelong learning, and enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed, and assume greater control over their own learning. It is increasingly important in the contemporary health field environment of rapid technological change and an overwhelming explosion of information resources. Read more about the Information Literacy program on the library's webpage.

More Information
These are but a few of the library services available to you. For more information, select Faculty Services on the library's webpage, or contact your liaison librarians.
