As the new Director of the School of Nursing, I want to tell you a little about myself. I have been a nurse for over 30 years. My very early career was spent working in acute care institutions particularly in critical care. However, the majority of my career has been in nursing education. I have taught in all levels of nursing education (diploma, associate, baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral) but have spent the most time teaching in baccalaureate and master’s degree programs. I have extensive experience in both the traditional classroom and the online environment. I consider my nursing specialty to be nursing education and would define my clinical focus as community-based care and gerontology. However, my research and scholarship interests focus more on issues related to women and the incorporation of equine facilitated psychotherapy in the treatment of women who have experienced abuse.
The School of Nursing is one of three academic units within the College of Nursing and Health Professions. The faculty in the School of Nursing are committed to providing exemplary undergraduate and graduate educational programs, scholarship, and community and professional service which are responsive to the needs of the citizens of Maine and the global community. The School of Nursing offers courses on the Portland campus and on the Lewiston-Auburn College campus. There are also a limited number of courses offered online.
In my short time at USM, I have found the faculty, staff and students to be enthusiastic supporters of quality nursing education who are committed to providing quality healthcare. I am honored to work with such a vibrant and engaged group of people.
The main office for the School of Nursing is located in Masterton Hall on the Portland campus. There is also an office on the Lewiston-Auburn College campus.
