Writing Across the Curriculum
FOR STUDENTS
Faculty who teach
writing at USM are committed to helping you develop excellent
writing skills. They
want you to have skill and confidence in composing and revising
presentations and arguments, in constructing effective sentences and
paragraphs, in making appropriate and effective word choices, and in
using correct punctuation and mechanics.
Faculty
are also committed to improving your ability to formulate original
ideas through the writing process.
As such, writing is a tool for improving learning and
fostering critical thinking and analysis.
The
integration of writing throughout the curriculum--in fields as
diverse as Philosophy, Environmental Science and Policy, and
Sociology—reveal how central effective writing skills are in a
variety of professional, personal, and civic contexts.
USM’s goal is to provide you with the skills to write and
communicate effectively in an array of contexts outside of academia,
though faculty also want you to write excellent academic papers.
