Writing Across the Curriculum
HELP! For Writers
USM offers services to students seeking to improve their
writing skills. The
Learning Foundations website is an excellent place to start. You can
find them at www.usm.maine.edu/lap.
Their site provides information on the Learning Centers in
Portland
and Gorham, tutoring programs, academic workshops, and courses in
writing proficiency.
You might also wish to consult USM’s College Writing
website at www.usm.maine.edu/eng/collegewriting.htm
There are other websites that you might
find helpful to your work as a writer. The first is the
companion site to the book, Diana Hacker's A Writer's Reference,
that many USM instructors use in their writing courses. The
URL for that site is www.dianahacker.com/writersref.
Colorado State also has a very helpful site that you can find at http://writing.colostate.edu
Good old-fashioned
books are among writers most valuable tools (and most valued
friends). Favorites
among faculty writers include the following:
- Strunk and White, The
Elements of Style
- Roget's
Thesaurus
- any good dictionary
